Want to Work Part-Time in Japan as a Student? Don’t Forget This Step!

If you’re studying in Japan on a Student visa, here’s something you should know — you can’t work by default.

In Japan, each residence status is tied to specific activities. The Student status is for studying, so part-time jobs are normally not allowed.

You can check your status on your Residence Card under “Status.”

How to Get Permission to Work

To take a part-time job, you’ll need ”the Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Permitted Under the Status of Residence” from the Immigration Services Agency.

💡 This permission lets you do work that’s outside the purpose of your current visa — in this case, working while your visa is for studying.

Make sure to apply for and receive this permit before you start working.

Not Sure About the Paperwork?

You can apply on your own, or you can hire a registered immigration lawyer or administrative scrivener to handle it for you.

They can prepare the forms, submit them, and deal with immigration on your behalf.

We offer a free first consultation, so if you’re unsure about the process or short on time, feel free to contact us.
